How I Learned to Actually Finish Adventure Games

August 7, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

I have a graveyard of half-finished games on my phone. For years I'd start something, get distracted, and never return. Adventure games were the worst offenders because they ask you to remember the plot.

What changed things for me was seeking out shorter, tighter games. Hollow Lantern is maybe three hours long, and I finished it in two sittings because it never overstayed its welcome. There's real value in a game that knows exactly how long its idea can carry.

My trick now is to treat a short adventure like a book I want to finish, not a chore to grind through. I set aside one quiet evening, no multitasking, and just play it through. It's a different, more satisfying way to engage.

If you're the type who starts and abandons games, try a deliberately short one next. Finishing something, even a three-hour game, feels surprisingly good.
